Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (Replacement)
Total shoulder arthroplasty, or total shoulder replacement, is a joint replacement surgery that commonly treats shoulder arthritis at its end stages, when the cartilage lining of the joint has eroded away.
According to Dr. Scott Ellsworth, an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in shoulder and elbow conditions, the appropriate treatment for shoulder arthritis depends on the severity of the patient’s symptoms and their goals of treatment. When non-surgical measures fail to markedly improve symptoms, a total shoulder replacement becomes an option for patients to consider.
